Reference Guide for Coin and Pin Finishes

This is a looooong page… feel free to scroll down and browse or click on one of the links below to go right to that section. You’ll see examples of what we can do; if you don’t see what you’re looking for, ask us… Alternatively, if we are engaged in discussions about your coin design, we may suggest a finish or effect that is not listed here. We reserve the right to suggest additional creativity, new techniques and yet-to-be tried procedures! All at no risk to you of course ;-)

Glitter Selections

The glitter swatches shown on the first image are "large Flake" glitter. This is the most popular glitter.

The Glitter swatches below are "Small Flake" glitter. Very fine glitter particles work well on smaller

coins and small paint filed areas.

Imitation Hard Enamel and Soft Enamel

imit-hard

Imitation hard enamel fills the recesses of the coin and is polished flush with the upper surface. The coin will have a smooth appearance. Imitation hard enamel is usually a bit more expensive that Soft Enamel.

soft-2d
Soft enamels flow into the recessed areas of the coin. The coin will have a more textured look. Soft enamel is usually less expensive than imitation hard enamel.

3D and 2D dies

3d-svr

The Front of the Severn Valley Railway coin above is an example of a coin struck with a 3-D die. The detail is fully textured and the art has various levels of depth. Note the use of detail below the surface of the translucent green enamel… Oooooh… very nice :-)
2d
The back of this coin was struck with a 2-D die. The image is made of raised and recessed metal areas only. Creative use of textures, translucent enamels and a mix of imitation hard and soft enamels, combined with an antique silver finish, create a stunning effect.

Edge Dies

Landsharkz owns dies for edge printing. Often, a stunning design doesn’t need the "TRACKABLE" wording sprawled across it. We will often suggest that we use one of our edge dies… at no extra cost to you… to preserve the face of your coin for the art. We have two edge dies (for round coins)… English (as shown) or our bilingual die which is in French and English.
