Hi there, Chris from Landsharkz here… We’ve decided to do a few reviews of some of our favourite products… to let you know how to use them and what we think of them. The first product to go under the Landsharkz’ “Eye-of-Scrutiny” is Zagg’s Invisible Shield. We have been selling Invisible Shields for a few years now and they are a favourite product of geocachers everywhere.

Zagg Invisible Shield for the Garmin Oregon

Invisible Shields are screen protectors for your GPS, cell phone, camera, iPod, and whatever other gadgets you may have. Our family has them on our phones, iPods, camera screens, and all our GPS units (we have a few)… and to be quite honest, we love this product. When applied properly, the shield is not noticeable on the screen at all, it is clean, clear and provides life-time protection from the inevitable scratches that one gets on well loved devices.

Zagg uses promo literature that shows how hard it is to puncture the shield material with a pen and the same material is used to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades from chips and nicks. It is space-age, super tough and comes pre-cut to the shape needed for your device. We carry Invisible Shields for most GPS units and popular devices like the iPhone 3G/3Gs.

Here are some pros and cons:

Pros:

Very clear, does not affect the visibility of the image on the screen – at all.

Money saver – One application is good for the life of your GPS (or other gadget you wish to protect). It has a lifetime warranty against scratches. There is no need to replace it when it peels or wears out… because it doesn’t.

Super Protective

Works great for touch-screen devices

Comes pre-cut for your device and ready to apply with application liquid, a special squeegee-card and lint-free cloth (keep the cloth for screen cleaning).

For many applications (like the iPhone or Helen’s Blackberry) you can choose between screen-protection only or full-body protection.

Did I say it is super tough and crystal clear?

Cons:

You must follow the directions for application, or you will screw it up. Remember that this is a for-life application to protect your investment… so follow the directions. Its not hard to do correctly, but it is important. Don’t just wing it!

DEET kills them. If you live where there are lots of bugs, be careful if you use DEET based insect repellant… direct contact with DEET will ruin your screen protector. We’re not sure if there is a safe concentration that is ok, but I’ve seen Invisible Shields that have been ruined by people who have have applied a mitt-full of high concentration DEET and then used a touch-screen device.

To think about:
Full body shields provide a no-slip texture to your device. Its great to help prevent you from dropping it or having it slip out of your hand. If you are considering a full body protector for an iPhone or Blackberry for example, try to feel one if you can before you buy. Not everyone likes the texture of the shield on the whole device. I personally don’t like the full-body feel of the Invisible Shield, but Helen really likes it on her Blackberry, so it really is personal preference.

More Info
So when all is said and done, this product is very pleasing to the Landsharkz Eye-of-Scrutiny. Here is some more information:

Click here to buy Invisible Shields and see more info on Landsharkz.ca (note if you don’t see the device you want, we can get it for you! just ask.)

Link to Zagg’s website: zagg.com

For fun – check out the videos below. Note that the application video shows the application spray, the newer shields come with the same liquid in a little sponge, but otherwise the process is as shown.

Title: The 6th Annual Vancouver Island Hide-&-Go Cache!
Location: Vancouver Island!
Link out: Click here
Description: The hide dates this year are Friday February 5th AND Saturday February 6th. Yes, 2 days!! (We’ve moved the hide days to a Friday and Saturday to give mtn-man more time to publish the caches during the weekend. Mtn-man knows about the event and will publish the caches as soon as he is able. There have been changes to www.geocaching.com and this is making reviewing slower.

The hide and event dates are earlier this year so as not to conflict with the Olympics.

This years’ theme is
“Hide-&-Go VI…”

This years’ Hide-&-Go is the 6th Annual event thus “VI” which is also “Vancouver Island”, and the “…” use your imagination, have fun and be creative! How many ways can you incorporate “6″ into a cache???

As with previous years, micros are allowed as part of this event only if they are ingeniously disguised in high traffic urban areas, and, each cacher can count only one micro in their total hides. Multi caches that have micros as the intermediate steps and a final container that is larger then a micro will not be counted as your micro hide.

We would like to see the same type of caches hidden that you like to find – mind-bending puzzles, ingeniously camouflaged urban micros, Lock&Locks in the woods, caches large enough for your trade items, etc.

There is a trophy for the cacher with the most hides.

Your caches must be hidden on Friday February 5th AND Saturday February 6th. No pre-hiding (or post-hiding) allowed.

You must abide by the geocaching.com cache placement guidelines when hiding your cache. Keep in mind that your hide must be at least 161 meters from another cache. When submitting a multi or puzzle cache, include the intermediate steps to speed up the approval process. Be nice to mtn-man!
(Victoria is getting saturated with caches and if there is a conflict with your cache you have 24 hours to move the cache and resubmit the page to mtn-man for your cache to be included in the event.)

After submitting your caches, please post a note in the vigps.com forums to indicate the name of the cache. On the cache page, please state that this cache was hidden as part of the Hide-&-Go VI…

The Go

As the caches start to appear on geocaching.com, go out and find them!

To qualify for the Most FTFs trophy, you must hide at least one cache. A couple years ago we had a few cases where a group wanted to be listed as FTF. To avoid confusion and squabbles, only one recognized cacher will be listed as the First finder.

But it’s not all about FTFs – just think about all the fresh air and exercise you will be getting by going out and finding all these new caches!

Waymarking

Last year Waymarking was an overwhelming success! If you would like to have a trophy in your home for a year, but don’t feel you can maintain any more caches, then this is the event for you!

There is a Trophy for the most Waymarks posted, and the most FTL (First to Log). To qualify for this portion of the event you must include a photo of the Waymarked object when you post the Waymark and when you log, even if photos are not a requirement for that category. We are including this rule so you cannot simply go through the phonebook and post all the McDonalds locations on the Island.
Start Date: 2010-02-05
End Date: 2010-02-06

Join us for an afternoon of Geocaching 101. This event will be a classroom setting where everyone can learn something new.

Have you heard about geocaching and you’d like to learn more about it? Maybe you got a GPS for Christmas but aren’t sure how to find a geocache. Perhaps you’ve got a few geocaches under your belt but want to find out more.
